Mr. H. C. Frick, Pittsburg, Pa.

Dear Mr. Frick:-

Confirming my telgram of last evening, not having bought the wood gatherers, as it sold for $5600. - a tremendous price. I had no chance what-so-ever to bid on it, as it first started at $3000. - and jumped up to $5000.- A friend of mine was willing to pay $5000.- but did not get it. Your limit was a very high one, and I am very glad, to speak frankly, that it was not knocked down to you, as you surely have a chance to get as good a picture, if not better for less money.
If you are inclined to part with your two paintings by Inness, this would be the time to send them to us as everybody seems to be "hot" on the subject and we could ask $3000.- apiece for them. More than likely my friend would buy one or probably both. He happens ot be Mr. Wm. R. Hearst.
Hoping you ar enot disappointed in not getting the "Wood gatherers" adn with kind regards to your family and inquiring friends, I remain, as always,
    Yours devoted,
    Charles Knoedler

P.S.) Enclosed please find clipping of sale which will give you an idea of the sale and the prices brought.
