This picture was thought at one time to represent Cardinal Quiroga, Archbishop of Toledo, but now it is generally believed to be St. Jerome. There are several versions of this same portrait: the original one is in Italy; another early one is in Musée Bonnat in Bayonne; the rest are found in the National Gallery, London, and in the collection of Count of Adanero in Madrid. This portrait is supposed to have been painted in 1584-1594. It formally belonged to the Cathedral of Valladolid, and was sold to Sr. Pares (1904)
