42 TERBORCH OR TERBURG, GERARD 1617-1681 PORTRAIT OF A LADY

Nearly full-length figure of a woman standing by a table regarding the spectator. Is dressed in black gown, disclosing in front a white satin skirt with gold lace trimmings. Around her neck she wears a delicate lace collar. Her white puffed sleeves are tied with small black ribbons. Her hair is drawn tight back and arranged in ringlets. Canvas: W. 16 5/8; H. 21 1/2. Collection: Thiem, San Remo , Italy.

43 THEOTOCOPULI, DOMENICO (EL GRECO) 1548-1625 ST. JEROME

Half-length, full face, hands resting on an open book which is on a table in front of him covered with green velvet cover. He wears a red cloak which buttons down the front. His beard is long and pointed, his hair growing low on his forehead is cut short. This portrait at one time was thought to represent Cardinal Quiroga, Archbishop of Toledo, but a medal bearing a likeness of the Cardinal in the Biblitheque in Madrid dispels this theory. Other less important versions of the portrait exist in the following collections: National Gallery, London, Musee Bonnat, Bayonne, and Collection of the Count of Adanero, Madrid. Signed in Greek in the middle right, "Domenico Theotocopuli." Canvas: W. 37 1/2; H. 43 1/2. From the Cathedral of Valladolid, Spain.
