NEW YORK November 21, 1914.
Mr. H.C. Frick,
Fifth Avenue and 70th St,
New York City, N.Y.
My dear Sir:
In the Panama-Pacific International Exposition which opens in San Francisco on February 20th and closes on December 4th, 1915, we are making in the Fine Arts Department a serious effort to do more than show a collection of good pictures. We are endeavoring for educational purposes to show schools of paintings, to trace their influence and to make clear their value.
Of all the painters who have influenced modern art no one is more important than James McNeill Whistler.
With this thought in mind we are arranging with special effort a comprehensive group of paintings by this incomparable artist, to be installed in a special Honor Gallery devoted entirely to his work. I write now in the hope that to assist in a real educational work you will be willing to lend to us for the Exposition "Count Robert," "Rosa Corder" and "The Ocean."
I need hardly to say that these works, if you would lend them to us, would be handled with every precaution, would be insured against every risk at your valuation and would be installed in the Exposition with dignity. Of course, whatever expense of any character to entailed would be borne by us.
I fully appreciate the importance of the favor which the Department asks of you, but I beg that you will consider this request made in no selfish spirit and I very much hope that you will find it within your power and inclination to assist us in our work.
Faithfully yours,
J.E.D. Trask
Chief of the Department of fine Arts
Saw him & may let him have the 3 Whistlers
