MEMORANDA

February 21st, 1912 – Called at Knoedler's. Saw Mr. C.S. Carstairs and Mr. R. F. Knoedler. Mr. Carstairs said the Holbein is in the hands of the "doctor", and could not be seen. He said Pete Widener came in and wanted to see it, but he did not show it to him. He said Mr. Widener wanted to know why he did not let him have a chance at that picture. Mr. Carstairs showed me Mr. Frick's Rembrandt "Portrait of himself", which has been cleaned and revarnished. It looks very well, very much lighter; they evidently took considerable dirt off the picture. I remarked that inserted: a Rembrandt could hardly be too dark for my taste, but Mr. Carstairs said the question is, what was the intent of the painter; that is what the restorer thinks about. He believed Mr. Frick will be very much pleased with it. Mr. Knoedler showed me a cable from Mr. Frick from Assuan, received February 11th, asking about Holbein and Rembrandt paintings. Mr. Knoedler told me he expects to go to Paris in April, and to play golf with Mr. Frick there.
