"Retreat from Moscow"
After the eventful passage of the Berezina, where Napoleon succeeded, in almost miraculous way, to escape from the Russians (commanded by Wittgenstein, Kutozoff, and Tchitchagoff Dec 5th) he came to the village of Smorgoni in Lithuania, and from there, taking with him Grand Equery Caulaincourt (Duke of Vicance) and Grand Marshall Duroc, he secretly left, the already nearly destroyed army and, in a common Russian post sleigh, began his memorable escape from his most terrible enemy, the frost.
