Many thanks for your favor of the 25th inst. with its enclosure of seven thousand five hundred dollars. We enclose as requested a memorandum of your account to date showing a balance in our favor of $1209. 30/100.
I did not think Helen would compromise on the portrait: it was really very nice of her to allow it to be hung in the library.
Chartran and Charlie write cheerfully. I am pleased to hear from you that they are behaving themselves. With kind remembrances to all believe me

P. S. Kurtz just informs us that the negative he made of your portrait was accidentally broken and that he wants the painting again to make a new one. He will pay all expenses both ways. I am very sorry that this mishap has happened but if you want photographs the picture has to come here. Of course the canvass alone would be required
