First of all, No. 50, the illustration on plate
facing page 16, a wonderful work of Pollajuolo. This is
undoubtedly one of the most marvellous pictures by that artist
in existence, and my first remark to you is that this picture
ought to go into an important collection. We have not done
anything with it as yet, but are waiting until October. In
the meantime, however, we should like to hear from you if this
fine object in any way interests you, because if it does we
are perfectly willing to reserve it and take the chance of
bringing it to America for your inspection.
I need hardly tell you how very difficult it is to
find great objects of this early Italian School. The photograph
does very scant justice to this work. It really wants to
be seen and all I can tell you is that the coloring is something marvellous.
On page 17 you will find an illustration of a
Portrait of a Young Man, ascribed by Dr. Bode to Botticelli.
This is another masterpiece.
On page 18 you will find a representation of a very
fine picture by Pessellino. This is rather a religious subject
