The son of Norman peasants, was born at Gruchy near Cherbourg. Received a simple but sound education from his grandmother and great-uncle. year in green ink: 1832 His first instruction in art was received from Langlois at Cherbourg. year in green ink: 1837 Pursued his studies in Paris at the studio of Delaroche. year in green ink: 1840 Exhibited a portrait at the Salon, and returned to Cherbourg, marrying the following year. year in green ink: 1842 Returned to Paris, where he struggled hard, and where his wife died. Again, went back to Normandy, remarried, and lived for a while in Havre. year in green ink: 1845 Went to Paris. year in green ink: 1849 Moved to Barbizon where he continued to live in strained circumstances. Travelled in southern France and in Switzerland.
