M. KNOEDLER & CO SUCCESSORS TO GROUPIL CO 355 FIFITH AVENUE NEW YORK CABLE ADDRESSES KNOEDLER-NEW YORK KNOEDLER-PARIS PARIS OFFICE, 2 RUE GLUCK Feb. 25th, 1899. Mr. H. C. Frick, Pittsburg, Pa. Dear Mr. Frick- I take pleasure in giving you some news of the picture which you ordered from Thaulow which is exhibited in the Paris show that he is now having. It is our Mr. Hamman of Paris who writes the following:- "The Pittsburg smokes" Thaulow's picture will also be exhibited, and I think that I already told you that that picture was a remarkable one. I mean to say that it is an excellent piece of color and quite an unusual subject. We will see what our critics here say about it. Montaignac very wisely did not say anything, or rather asked me what I thought of it. Thaulow seems anxious to hear what Mr. Frick will say. I have not seen Pittsburg and consequently cannot say whether the picture is a faultable image of that city but I am of the opinion that it is a masterful piece of coloring, a most original work. I like it extremely." (Montaignac is one of the dealers in Paris who handles Thaulow's exclusively.) I improve of this opportunity of letting you know of an extremely fine example by Fortuny, a very rare work and most important water color, entitled, "Mazarin's library" which we just secured and I am sure it will be of great interest to you. It is a most unique work.
