Dear Sir:-
Dear Sir:-

Since you came here, I have done my best to get a reduction on the price of the two pictures, which you saw here, by Fromentin and Van Marcke respectively, but find it is impossible to obtain a reduction without having a cash offer to make, the more so as the owners of these two pictures have no reason to reduce their price unless they see they have a chance of disposing of their pictures.

I am leaving for Paris on Saturday next and would like to close some transaction with you before I leave; with this in view, I would willingly reduce my commission almost to nothing rather than miss the business.

As I told you, an offer of eight thousand dollars was refused on the Fromentin, but I would advise you to offer $9000. (nine thousand), which might perhaps be accepted, though of course I do not feel certain of the result. At this price the picture would be a bargain as I consider it worth much more.

As for the Van Marcke, it cost originally some $15,000., and that was many years ago, but as the owner wishes to dispose of it, he may perhaps be tempted to let it go at a much smaller amount. The offer
