My dear Mr. Frick,
Your letter announcing the sailing for Europe of the Byers family came duly to hand yesterday. Thank you for your kind thought for us and interest in our affairs. I was delighted to hear of it as I have often thought it would be an immense amount of pleasure for him to see such collections as Chauchard's, Thierry's etc where such high quality pictures are to be found & I think he will be better pleased with some of his own. I cabled you asking you to ascertain his banker and cable us. I trust this has not put you to any trouble. I would not want to miss him.
You will be glad to learn that we have been doing some business since you [left].
Have sold in addition to a number of inexpensive pictures the Kums Millet Segond Corot (The 2 pictures you saw at Le Roy's), Donatis Corot (you saw at Obachs) & the Troyon "Going to Market"
in all about $100,000.
Mr Watson bought the 2 latter also a very good Ziem. He asked to see the Anthony Roux picture & I told him Roux was away & that he had also sold the Corot, but he hasn't the first idea that you bought it, he will be greatly surprised when he learns that it is adorning a Pittsburg home.
I presume by this time you are enjoying your purchases of this summer, they no doubt have added greatly to the tone of your collections. I feel anxious to see how they look at home.
I feel worried to know where to find star pictures for the coming winter having now sold about everything in sight. Have been very quiet since you left no late hours nothing but work.
Sulley has gotten a great Romney such a beautiful young girl 25 x 30. Watson went wild over it but had spent all his money in Paris.
Looking forward to the pleasure of seeing you next month & with kind regards to your family & Mellon
Sincerely
Chas. A. Carstairs
