is an hypothesis of the same kind. I have only to ask you to name
the stone cutter who did it. These signature have interested me
and I may some day carry the study further. With more material
at hand it would be easy to distinguish contemporary from
posthumous signature. This La Clairon signature appears to me
contemporary, not done by Houdon himself, but probably an
indication that he made that bust in the year indicated.
