My dear Mr. Frick,
I went down on Saturday to Longford Castle, near Salisbury, with Mr. White and his friend Dr. Cox. Dr. Cox seemed to have the entrée and I was taken round as a friend of his to see the pictures, Mr. White being left at the gate. I spent as much time as I could before Holbein's picture of "Erasmus" which was not hung to get the best light.
My opinion of this picture may be somewhat biased because of the fascination which Erasmus has always had for me. It is well known that Holbein greatly admired Erasmus with whom he was brought into contact by Froben at Basle, Froben if you remember having befriended them both. This picture shows a wonderfully intimate and sympathetic appreciation of the fine character of Erasmus. The delicate and sensitive face in this picture is exactly what my study
